Cultural Presentation No. 2: Herbal Remedies as Alternative Medicine

Cultural Presentation No.2: Herbal Remedies as Alternative Medicine*

According to research presented in the student textbook and related scholarly publication, the use of herbal remedies and alternative medicine is prevalent among Hispanic patients.  These remedies are often associated with tradition and patients may hesitate to disclose this information to healthcare professionals during the medical interview for a variety of reasons. Students will be assigned an herb commonly used among Hispanic patients and asked to research its its use and prevalence as well as any potentially harmful side-effects or interactions with prescription medication. Awareness of this phenomena and the potential hazards of drug interactions would provide students with information to better manage patient health and wellness as well as cultivate respect for and understanding of alternative medical practices in other cultures.
